“One writes in order to communicate something to those who are absent. The absence of the sender, the addressor, from the marks that he abandons, which are cut off from him and continue to produce effects beyond his presence and beyond the present actuality of his meaning, that is, beyond his life itself” (Derrida).
Absence and presence, positive and negative, light and dark are all significant in this work.
At a time when our physical interactions with words is changing, and the art of handwriting is being lost, I am taking the writing off the page; re-enlivening the words, the actions, the feeling and bringing them back into the world.
How will our stories be told when we are no longer here?
The sculpture is hand-cut using a scalpel and 160gsm acid-free paper.
